Huge Eating Day

I woke up very early this morning (2:45am) so I only logged six hours of sleep. I caught an early flight for work this morning and travel always causes me some stress, although since I woke up so early I left the house early and didn’t have to worry about missing my flight.

flight

The big news of the day was a huge calorie and carbohydrate intake. I ate about double the number of calories I normally would and this included a bunch of food not in line with my version of Primal/Paleo eating. I think my body decided to catch up from yesterday because I only ate an estimated 1300 cals and I had a great day (from a business perspective) and decided to celebrate with wine, fast food, and sugar!!!

I am ready for the weekend–as always…

A Fairly Primal/Paleo Day

I woke up feeling okay after almost eight hour of sleep–maybe a little groggy from the wine yesterday. 😉 I feel very good about my eating today as I stuck fairly close to my version of Primal/Paleo eating. I had a bunch of leftovers I needed to consume so I did bratwurst and fresh kale sauteed in bacon fat for lunch and leftover smoked chicken for dinner.

I stayed with the intermittent fasting routine by eating only two meals at about noon and then dinner at about six in the evening. I’ve been monitoring myself each morning when I wake up to see if my body is in ketosis, and I have been for a couple of weeks now. Maintaining this ketogenic state allows me to focus on just about everything other than hunger and food–my body is using my own stored fat as fuel. Oh yeah, the side benefit for me is a lean body with little effort! 😉

I hope the weekend treated you right and, as always…

Happy July 4th!

According to my FitBit Surge, I got nine hours of sleep last night and I woke up feeling fantastic! After chilling out in the morning, I hit the gym in the early afternoon to try and catch up on the two workouts I missed due to business travel. I wanted to workout in a fasted state, so I ended up only eating one meal today at around 7pm. I did drink BCAAs during and after my workout which I normally try to do.

The holiday meal at my house included smoked chicken, my world famous french fries (done in grass-fed tallow), steamed broccoli, left-over bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers, fruit, and many glasses of red wine. :) Other and a couple of glasses too many of red wine, I did a good job of following my version of Primal/Paleo eating!

Happy Birthday America and, as always…

Work Stress Stinks

I think most folks experience work stress–some more often than others. Today was a particularly stressful work day for me which included a presentation to management–the presentation went very well, thank goodness!!

After work, I completely let loose! :) Had a couple glasses of wine, ate some popcorn, and later pigged out on Five Guys. I decided to postpone my Friday workout until Saturday as well.

Looking forward to catching up on some sleep this weekend and leaving the week’s work stress in the rear view mirror! As always…

Rest, Recharge

Over ten hours of sleep and I woke up feeling great. Did some yard work then opened a bottle of wine and grilled steaks. Simply a day to rest and recharge.

Hope your weekend was great and, as always…

Primal/Paleo Eating Day

Remedy for my slight hangover :)

Got a decent night’s sleep last night and woke up feeling pretty good. I did have that third glass of red wine last night and, believe it or not, I could feel the some slight residual hangover symptoms–nothing that a quick dose of caffeine didn’t fix!

This is the Vitamix 6300 which is the model I have.

I had a very busy day running the kids to swimming practice and dance rehearsal while working on this web site and doing some gardening in between. In keeping with my daily intermittent fasting ritual I had my first meal at around 1pm: eggs, bacon, a potato along with a green smoothy chocked full of spinach, kale, banana, apple, strawberries, celery, cucumber and lime. Super easy to make with my Vitamix! Ended the day’s eating around 7pm with leftover bratwurst and broccoli with another baked potato.

My diet today stayed right in line with my version of Primal/Paleo eating–delicious and highly nutritious, real food minus the refined sugar, grains, and processed food I aim to avoid.

I hope you are enjoying the weekend and, as always…

Feed The Machine

The Vitamix makes prep and cleanup for protein shakes easy!

Woke up this morning feeling great after about eight hours of sleep–since the kids didn’t have school I slept until 7am (unheard of for me). Had a busy day with meetings and conference calls so I took the easy route for my first meal: a protein shake with baby kale and spinach. This works so well for me when I don’t have time to cook a proper meal and my Vitamix makes both preparation and cleanup a snap!

I had a big workout after work today and came home starving. :) I seemed like I couldn’t eat enough food and kept heading back to the kitchen for more. I listened my body and kept feeding the machine with mostly food that fits my version of Primal/Paleo eating. I say “mostly” because I went past my normal two glasses of red wine :) and then chowed down on one of my guilty pleasures: popcorn popped in coconut oil and grass-fed butter with lots of sea salt–yum!

The result of all this eating was an estimated total calorie consumption of over 3,100 calories. Hey, no sweat because my body craved the fuel and I managed to keep my estimated carbohydrate load to only about 162g. I would guess my body will stay in ketosis despite the overall calorie consumption.

The weekend is here so, as always…

Friday Accidental Splurge

It’s Friday and I actually woke up very tired for the first time in a long time. This is the kind of tired that makes you not want to get out of bed. I had a meeting that lasted until 11pm last night and had to wake up at 5am this morning so my FitBit One tracker showed me getting less than six hour of sleep–ouch!

The rest of my normal routine was messed up as I had drive my daughter to school, so my regularly scheduled Friday workout will have to happen tomorrow. That’s okay because I just wasn’t feeling great about doing squats after my short night of sleep.

Since I had a busy schedule today I tried something different for lunch to save time. I used my trusty Vitamix to make a protein shake. I normally prefer eating real food over shakes with protein powder, but I needed to whip up something quick so here’s what I used:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 scoop chocolate whey protein
  • about a teaspoon cocoa power
  • a couple of dashes of cinnamon
  • splash of vanilla
  • 1 banana
  • a couple of tablespoons of Just Like Sugar Table Top Sweetener
  • 1 cup organic baby spinach
  • 1 cup organic baby kale
  • 2 cups ice cubes

So I added greens to a protein shake and I wasn’t sure how it would taste, but it was surprisingly good and filling! I think the Just Like Sugar Table Top Sweetener helped. This is the first time I’ve tried this product and I like it, so I’m adding it to the Cool Stuff section.

The shake satisfied me until dinner where I broke out the leftover Paleo Balsamic Chicken and Sausage with some steamed zucchini and yellow squash topped with butter and sea salt, a baked potato, and a glass of red wine.

If I had ended the day’s eating at this point, I would consider my choices pretty much right along the lines of my version of Primal/Paleo eating. But…yeah, there’s a “but”…I heard the leftover birthday cake screaming my name, so I scarfed some down, rationalizing that it is Friday night after a long week, so I deserved it! :) Man, sugar tastes so good. 😀 I’m okay with my accidental splurge, a little sugar isn’t going to kill me. In fact, even with the cake my estimated carbohydrate intake was still under 200g for the day, so I should maintain my ketogenic state.

The weekend is here–as always…

Finally Friday, Stressful Week

I woke up this morning feeling great! Started the day in the normal fashion by taking my ketosis test (positive, which is good), taking my daily 5g dose of creatine, revving up on caffeine, and taking my  pre-workout BCAAs.

This week included a healthy dose of work-related stress, and my food and beverage consumption today reflected it! :( The positive is I made some good choices: keeping my eating in an eight hour window and making the first meal nutritious, with bacon, eggs and a green smoothy. The not-so-positive is I enjoyed some red wine, chips and cheese dip, and a little bit of leftover birthday cake. I’m proud I was able to hold off on eating that cake all week…until tonight. 😀 Dang that Shiraz and chocolate cake went well together…

I’m glad the weekend is here–as always…

My Ketosis Streak Is Broken

My Ketonix Breath Ketone Analyzer (ignore the cute doggie in the background)

My Ketonix Breath Ketone Analyzer (ignore the cute doggie in the background)

I woke up this morning and, like I do every day, I used my Ketonix breath ketone analyzer to determine if my body is in a ketogenic state. I have been on quite a roll and have been in ketosis for a couple of months. Well, the streak is over! :( When you look at my food diary for Saturday, my estimated carbohydrate was fairly low for me at 108g, so what the heck happened?

My theory is there are two reasons why my body slipped out of ketosis:

  1. The carbs I consumed were not “good” carbs: peanut butter cups, red wine, and popcorn. Hmmmm, not exactly green, leafy vegetables! :)
  2. My physical activity for the part few days has been almost nonexistent.

My history shows I can get away with eating some “bad carbs,” like those listed above, as long as I maintain my normal level of physical activity. So maybe the combination of the two factors above is the cause?

I really like maintaining a ketogenic state because it means my blood sugar is low and I’m burning ketones as my primary fuel (instead of glucose).

So what’s my plan to get back into ketosis? Get back to my version of Primal/Paleo eating, focus on intermittent fasting, and get back to my workout routine.

In any case, I hope your weekend went great and, as always…
