Another day of waking up in a good mood after another great night of sleep, according to my FitBit Surge. Clearly taking a week off from business travel has done wonders for my stress levels.

The good news is my body has returned to a ketogenic state and I am burning my body fat. What put me back into ketosis? Probably not eating any processed food with no sugar or grains, doing intermittent fasting and compressing my eating down to about a 5 hour window, and completing a rigorous workout featuring heavy (for me) deadlifts.

One of the great benefits for me of being home is it allows me prepare my own food. Tonight I made a great side dish, cauliflower and zucchini fried rice. I used my Vitamix to blend cauliflower into “rice” and cut up some zucchini and half an onion. One trick is to use cheese cloth to squeeze as much water out of the cauliflower a possible. I sauteed all of this in bacon drippings with salt, pepper and then further seasoned with coconut aminos (kinda like soy sauce). Then I spread it all out on a baking sheet and put under the broiler until brown and crispy. This was absolutely delicious!

I feel great as we head past hump day and, as always…

Another Healthy Eating Day

Woke up feeling good with minimal stress considering it is Monday and the start of a new work week. I am definitely doing better in the sleep department, logging (with my new FitBit Surge) nearly eight hours last night.

I managed another healthy eating day with a green smoothie (made easily with my trusty Vitamix) and leftover salmon for lunch and rotisserie chicken with a baked potato and broccoli for dinner. All my food choices today followed my version of Primal/Paleo eating with lots of saturated fat, good protein, and no refined sugar, grains, or processed food! Couple this with a great workout, and it’s a pretty good Monday. :)

I hope your work week started out positively and, as always…

Rest Day – Paleo Eating Day

Woke up in a great mood, rested after a full night of sleep. I had plans to get some chores done around the house, but my body and mind needed rest, so I didn’t do too much today but rest. I stuck to my version of Primal/Paleo eating and did a good job of keeping the refined sugar, grains and processed food out of my diet today. I woke up in a ketogenic state as is my goal, and got back to a regular intermittent fasting routine eating my normal two meals: one around noon and one about 7pm. The jalapeno peppers are in high production in the hydroponic garden, so I made another huge and delicious batch of poppers–yum!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend and, as always…

Another One Meal Day

I woke up feeling much better than the past few days because I logged over ten hours of sleep! According to my FitBit Surge, I fell asleep around 6pm last night and woke up at my normal time, roughly 5:15am. Clearly my body needed the rest!

I had an incredibly busy work day and when the smoke cleared at around 5pm, I had not had time to eat anything. For me, this is the magic of ketogenic living–hunger does not dominate my life. I can operate, both physically and mentally, for extended periods of time without needing to eat. I left work and went straight to the gym without eating because I like to lift in a fasted state, so I didn’t eat a meal until after 9pm!

How do manage to live like this without head aches, irritability, dizziness, and the other symptoms associated with low blood sugar? I think there are many factors but mostly I have trained my body to use ketones (as opposed to glucose) as my body’s primary fuel source and I practice intermittent fasting (trying to keep my eating to an eight hour window each day). Th key to transitioning my body from being a sugar burner to a fat burning beast has been trying hard to avoid the consumption of sugar, grains, and processed food–I try to follow my version of Primal/Paleo eating. By the way, the awesome side benefit of this way of life is a lean body (because my body uses stored body fat as fuel).

I sure hope everyone had a wonderful work week and, as always…

Great Eating Choices

I woke up feeling more rested than yesterday, but I am still not getting enough sleep. This is after professing to the world how I make sleep a priority in this blog post. I feel like a hypocrite!

As bad as I feel about my sleep lately, I feel great about my food choices today! No processed food, no grains, and no refined sugar! Yup, that’s my version of Primal/Paleo eating.

My health journey will always be filled with pot holes–as always…

Low Carbin’

After my mini-vacation, I’m back to trying to get back to keeping my carbohydrate intake low. For me this means ingesting under 200g of carbs. The reason is that my testing has shown that I seem to keep myself in a ketogenic state at around that level of carbohydrate intake.

The benefit for me of staying in ketosis is staying lean with little effort, and a superior mental state. It seems when I slip out of ketosis, due to eating refined sugar, grains, and processed food, my hunger becomes unbearable and the desire to eat things not adhering to my version of Primal/Paleo is overpowering and I fall into a downward spiral.

It feels good to get back in track–as always…

My Ketonix Is Here!

Ketonix-Red-2015You may have noticed I have not been posting my ketosis status for the past few weeks–normally it appears in the “My Stats” table in the upper-right corner of this site. This is because I upgraded the measuring device, the Ketonix Breath Ketone Analyzer, from the original model to the latest and greatest model.

Keeping my body in a ketogenic state is a goal of mine as I have found I feel so much better using ketones as my primary fuel vs glucose. In this state I am not required to eat every few hours or suffer the “low blood sugar” symptoms: light headed, unable to focus, etc. When in a ketogenic state I can go long periods of time without eating because my body uses my own stored fat as fuel, which is nice because the awesome  side-effect is it is relatively easy to stay lean!

How do I achieve a ketogenic state? I keep my carbohydrate low (I strive for under about 200g per day), I try to stay away from sugar, grains, and processed food, and I also practice intermittent fasting.

I’m so excited to resume my ketosis testing with this upgraded device as I should be able to further narrow down my personal carbohydrate tolerance level.

Here’s to my low-carb experiment and, as always…

Listened To My Body

green-smoothy-featured

The green smoothy made it back into my diet today. My Vitamix makes the best green smoothies!

Seems like the past few days I’ve been consuming a few hundred calories more than normal but today it seems my body seemed to want less. I listened and, as a result, only ate about 1,600 calories. The point is, I find when sticking to my version of Primal/Paleo eating and I stay away from sugar, grains, and processed food, I don’t engage in mindless snacking. Perhaps this is because sugar and high carbohydrates consumption always makes me hungry and I can’t seem to eat enough. I guess low-carb, higher fat intake keeps me satisfied and probably results in a reasonable amount of calorie consumption.

I sure hope your week is progressing nicely and, as always…

Birthday Party & Pizza

Eighteen years ago today my son made his earthly debut–seems like yesterday! As I’ve mentioned before, my son has a crazy schedule on Wednesdays, check this out:

  • Morning Swim Practice 5:30am – 6:30am
  • School all day
  • Track Practice 3:30pm – 4:30pm
  • Night Swim Practice 5:30pm – 7:30pm

Wow! So after all that we a family birthday dinner for him featuring his favorite: Babes Pizza, home of the Double Decker!

babes-pizzaAs you might imagine, pizza is not the type of food that fits my normal Primal/Paleo eating pattern–this pizza isn’t gluten free! 😀 Let me tell you, this pizza tasted sooooo good and, along with beer and chocolate chip cookies, these are among the top foods I miss eating.

Here’s the thing, I stuffed my face tonight with this delicious food and guess what? I didn’t collapse and die. I’m not in the hospital, clinging to life. My point is, I’m perfectly fine eating and drinking things occasionally that aren’t exactly part of my ideal diet. The trick for me is limiting these splurges so I don’t allow sugar, grains, and processed food to creep back into my diet on a regular basis.

It will be interesting to see how the high carbohydrate load–I estimated 262g today and that is probably a bit low–affects my body when I do my ketosis test tomorrow morning. My guess is this load will throw me out of my ketogenic state so stay tuned to find out…:)

As you can tell I’m confident in my self-discipline to celebrate life’s events and then switch right back into “health mode.” As always…

Green Smoothy Secret Ingredient

I’m a bit obsessive and compulsive about certain things, like exercise and diet ;), but you’ve probably figured that out! As a result, I go through streaks of eating certain things often, in short, I get on food kicks. I’m currently in a green smoothy kick, which is a great thing for me because these I feel these drinks are so healthy!

avocadoOne trick I use to make these smoothies not only tasty good, but also creamy and full of good fat, is to add avocado to the mix. Good fat is such an important macro nutrient in my version of a Primal/Paleo eating strategy because it promotes satiety which, in turn, can help me stay away from less desirable foods, like sugar, grains, and process foods. I rely heavily on my Vitamix to streamline making these drinks and cleaning up.

I’d love to hear from you on smoothies–do you use them? Let me know and, as always…
