Help Me Undo A Holiday Binge

I need support and I’m asking for your help. If you are familiar with me you probably know I find sugar and grains highly addictive. I love the Thanksgiving holiday and all the wonderful food, especially stuffing (made with bread), sweet potato casserole (which seems to be mostly sugar the way we make it), mashed potatoes, rolls and buns (for those turkey sandwiches), and of course, cookies and pies.

This Thanksgiving weekend I decided, from Thursday until Sunday, I would eat and drink anything and everything the holiday had to offer–and I did. Boy did it taste good–but I also didn’t feel very good at times. Maybe it’s all in my head, but it seems I just feel better when I eat clean and drink plenty of water.

Look at the other thing that happened–my weight shot up 5.4 lbs:

weight-gain-2015-11-30

A bunch of this is water weight, as I tend to retain water when I deviate from my version of Primal/Paleo eating, but I can also feel my clothes fitting tighter and my gut has expanded.

ketonix-11-30-21056

I did not perform my normal ketosis test all weekend until this morning and I only registered an “8”–anything under 25 means I’m not in fat-burning mode. I can pretty much bet I never came close to a ketogenic state based on the very high carbohydrate and sugar load I bombarded my body with over the four days.

Clean Eating Challenge

Now, to get back on track, I’m going to try to eat clean until Christmas, roughly three weeks. My goal is to stick close to my version of Primal/Paleo eating and shed the body fat. On top of that, I’m going to commit to my weight lifting routine so I’ll be lean and ripped :)

I could use your moral support in this endeavor! I am weak when it comes to eating at times, especially when I workout consistently–I get so hungry and I tend to slip and eat the bad things.

So who’s with me? Anyone else want to take the challenge and roll into Christmas lean and shredded…let’s do this and, as always…

I know I go on and on about how important sleep is to me, but I’m going to say it again! :) Last night I logged nearly 10 hours of sleep and I woke up ready to conquer the world. As I do every day, I used my Ketonix ketone breath analyzer to see if my body was still in a ketogenic state. I was quite curious because I estimate I had consumed well over 300g of carbohydrate yesterday, but the device showed me in ketosis despite the abundance of carbs.

My eating today was both bad (leftover Chinese for lunch) and good (a salad from Chipotle for dinner). On the exercise front, I finally made it to the gym, and also hit my walking goal as well!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend and, as always…

Little Sleep–Big Fast

Had a meeting that ran late last night and got up early this morning–the result, very tired today! My FitBit Surge tracked my sleep at about 4.5 hours–yikes. :(

I usually eat two meals, the first around noon and then dinner sometime in the evening before 8pm. Today I ended up extending my normal fast, other than a handful of almonds in the late afternoon, until after 5pm because my work day was crazy. Then, because of the lack of sleep, I sat down in front of the TV and fell asleep resulting in me eating a single meal. The good news is the meal definitely followed my version of Primal/Paleo eating: a green smoothie with leftover chicken, broccoli, cauliflower rice, and a large baked potato with butter and sour cream.

I guess, because of the lack of sleep, I forgot to test my body for ketosis first thing in the morning (as I normally do), so I tested in the late morning and my Ketonix Breath Analyzer showed my NOT in a ketogenic state. This perplexes me as I would assume, having not eaten in well over 12 hours, my body should have been producing a large amount of ketones. Hmmmmm….

In any case, the weekend is inching closer–as always…

The Day After…

I woke up feeling a little tired but otherwise good this morning. Yesterday I ate a huge amount of food with a significant carbohydrate load. I thought there would be little chance that I would test in ketosis (I test first thing when I get up in the morning) but, to my surprise, my Ketonix Breath Ketone Monitor showed me in a ketogenic state!

Today I made good choices for lunch and not so good choices for dinner. It’s always a battle with kids and time when fast food is sooooo convenient :(

In any case, the weekend is upon us–as always…

Out Of Ketosis :(

Woke up feeling great after a full night of sleep. As I do every day, I used my Ketonix Ketone Breath Analyzer and, much to my surprise, the test showed me NOT in ketosis!!!! I tested three times and also re-calibrated the device and each time it showed the same result. I’m not sure why this happened but I wonder if it had something to so with me no doing my normal intermittent fasting the previous day. Not sure.

In any case, today I did get back to intermittent fasting and ended up only eating one meal. My hydroponic garden produced a a couple dozen small jalapeno peppers and my daughter found a killer Primal popper recipe which I added my own twist to. First I halved the peppers and removed the  seeds. Then I stuffed the halves with a sausage, Parmesan cheese, and cream cheese mixture. Now my twist: I took two halves with filling and put them back together and then wrapped them with bacon!!!! Then I baked them for 20 minutes at 425. After that I broiled them for a few minutes to crisp the bacon. Sooooooooo good!

I hope everyone had a super weekend and, as always…

Busy Monday, Low Calories

Monday’s are crazy busy. I woke up feeling a little of that “Monday morning work stress.” I used my new Ketonix Breath Ketone Analyzer and my body did not test positive for ketosis. Not good. Broke my fast with a Business lunch around noon and then ate leftover steak and squash after my evening workout.

I hope your work week started off great and, as always…

Walking The Carb Line

Woke up feeling good after getting over eight hours of sleep, according to my FitBit One tracker. In keeping  with my intermittent fasting routine, I only ate two meals today, the first being a business lunch at a Korean place at around noon, and then I ate my second meal around 8pm. The idea is to try and keep my eating inside an eight hour window.

In looking at my estimated macro nutrients, which admittedly is a rough guess (especialy when I eat out), I consumed about 226g carbohydrate–my goal is to keep that number under 200g. Now that I have my Ketonix Breath Ketone Analyzer, I was able to track my body’s state of ketosis to see if the food I ate forced my out of my ketogenic state. Here’s what I found out:

  • Woke up (hadn’t eaten since evening before), at 5:12am I tested in ketosis (46 value)
  • After eating around noon, at 2:24pm I tested in ketosis (29 value)
  • After eating around 8pm, at 9:57pm I tested in ketosis (27 value)

So, despite eating a fairly high level of carbohydrate throughout the day  (an estimated 226g), I maintained a ketogenic state all day. Now I did have a fairly rigorous workout between the meals at 5:30pm–I’m guessing the weight lifting probably helped burn some of the excess glucose thus helping to keep me ketogenic.

I hope all this isn’t boring :) as I find this stuff fascinating! The bottom line for me is…

My Ketonix Is Here!

Ketonix-Red-2015You may have noticed I have not been posting my ketosis status for the past few weeks–normally it appears in the “My Stats” table in the upper-right corner of this site. This is because I upgraded the measuring device, the Ketonix Breath Ketone Analyzer, from the original model to the latest and greatest model.

Keeping my body in a ketogenic state is a goal of mine as I have found I feel so much better using ketones as my primary fuel vs glucose. In this state I am not required to eat every few hours or suffer the “low blood sugar” symptoms: light headed, unable to focus, etc. When in a ketogenic state I can go long periods of time without eating because my body uses my own stored fat as fuel, which is nice because the awesome  side-effect is it is relatively easy to stay lean!

How do I achieve a ketogenic state? I keep my carbohydrate low (I strive for under about 200g per day), I try to stay away from sugar, grains, and processed food, and I also practice intermittent fasting.

I’m so excited to resume my ketosis testing with this upgraded device as I should be able to further narrow down my personal carbohydrate tolerance level.

Here’s to my low-carb experiment and, as always…

Running Crazy

chipotle-menu_salad-rawMonday’s are usually crazy busy and today was no exception. Drop my daughter at the bus stop early, head to the office for meetings, back to the home office for more conference calls, head to the high school to pick up my daughter from her study session (while on calls), and then head to the gym for an evening workout. Whew!

I woke up refreshed as, according to my FitBit One tracker, I got over eight hours of sleep. I took my daily 5g dose of creatine per usual and kick started my brain with a can of my favorite, all-natural energy drink, Celsius.

Lunch included a salad from Chipotle and dinner consisted of leftover chicken with a baked potato and zucchini. The food choices pretty much followed my version of Primal/Paleo eating and I consumed the food in an eight-hour window following my daily intermittent fasting routine. With an estimated carbohydrate intake of about 80g, I’m assuming my body stayed in ketosis, but I don’t know for sure since I’m still waiting for my new Ketonix Sport to arrive.

Good way (nutritionally) to start off the work week–as always…

Darn You Leftover Cake

I’ve mentioned plenty of times how addictive sugar and grains are to me! Yesterday I mentioned indulging in some cake and ice cream and not stressing about it. I was banking that the others in the house might eradicate it before today but, alas, when I got home from the gym, there sat the leftover goodies! :( Having no control, I ended up having a bit again tonight.

This is what I use to make my green smoothy

Despite not getting enough sleep, I woke up in a good mood with less stress. Other than the junk I mentioned above, the rest of my diet pretty much followed my version of Primal/Paleo eating. I followed my ritual of intermittent fasting and had eggs, bacon, a potato and a wonderful green smoothy (effortlessly, hand crafted with my trusty Vitamix 😉 ). Even with the cake and ice cream, I kept my estimated carbohydrate intake well under my goal of 200g, so I would bet my body stayed in ketosis. Hopefully my new Ketonix Sport ketone breath analyzer will show up soon and I can continue my daily testing.

We are halfway through the work week so, as always…
