Help Me Undo A Holiday Binge

I need support and I’m asking for your help. If you are familiar with me you probably know I find sugar and grains highly addictive. I love the Thanksgiving holiday and all the wonderful food, especially stuffing (made with bread), sweet potato casserole (which seems to be mostly sugar the way we make it), mashed potatoes, rolls and buns (for those turkey sandwiches), and of course, cookies and pies.

This Thanksgiving weekend I decided, from Thursday until Sunday, I would eat and drink anything and everything the holiday had to offer–and I did. Boy did it taste good–but I also didn’t feel very good at times. Maybe it’s all in my head, but it seems I just feel better when I eat clean and drink plenty of water.

Look at the other thing that happened–my weight shot up 5.4 lbs:

weight-gain-2015-11-30

A bunch of this is water weight, as I tend to retain water when I deviate from my version of Primal/Paleo eating, but I can also feel my clothes fitting tighter and my gut has expanded.

ketonix-11-30-21056

I did not perform my normal ketosis test all weekend until this morning and I only registered an “8”–anything under 25 means I’m not in fat-burning mode. I can pretty much bet I never came close to a ketogenic state based on the very high carbohydrate and sugar load I bombarded my body with over the four days.

Clean Eating Challenge

Now, to get back on track, I’m going to try to eat clean until Christmas, roughly three weeks. My goal is to stick close to my version of Primal/Paleo eating and shed the body fat. On top of that, I’m going to commit to my weight lifting routine so I’ll be lean and ripped :)

I could use your moral support in this endeavor! I am weak when it comes to eating at times, especially when I workout consistently–I get so hungry and I tend to slip and eat the bad things.

So who’s with me? Anyone else want to take the challenge and roll into Christmas lean and shredded…let’s do this and, as always…

I’m back after taking the long weekend off–needed to decompress and just do nothing but eat, drink and relax! I managed to wake up feeling good, despite returning to work after the long weekend, after getting over eight hours of sleep.

Very busy day. I ended up only eating one meal as I just wasn’t hungry after my evening workout. I was just ready to hit the bed early after a long day.

Hope everyone survived the start of the work week and, as always…

I Had A Happy Father’s Day!

I hope all the fathers had a wonderful day–I know I did. I got up early and headed out a little before 6 a.m. to my son’s swim meet and I ended the day late, a little after 11 p.m., after my daughter’s dance recital–the perfect day for this father!

But….since this was a “holiday” for me, I decided to eat lots of pure junk today, including doughnuts and fast food. Oh well, I’m not stressing about it…it’s just one day.

I did get a new fitness toy, the FitBit Surge–I am so happy! :)

What a great weekend, hope you all enjoyed it as well and, as always…

I’m Back…

I took a couple of days off from posting entries in the food diary–needed to chill over the holiday weekend. :) Today I did a good job of sticking to my version of Primal/Paleo eating with a lunch of a grass-fed cheeseburger (no bun) and a green smoothy, and then a dinner of a grilled pork chop with steamed broccoli and cauliflower grits. Now I meant to make cauliflower rice, but I overdid the cauliflower in the Vitamix. :) By the way, the “grits” tasted great!

Holiday Week

Due to Memorial Day I started Week 2 of my new StrongLifts Advanced cycle on Tuesday instead of Monday. Today I did the scheduled squats, bench press, and Pendlay rows. As usual, I warmed up with foam rolling, stretching, body weight squats, and barbell front squats.

This was an early evening workout and the place was packet with high school kids. On one hand, I love the fact that a new generation is killing it in the gym–on the other hand, I’d rather have the racks and free weight area to myself! 😉

Short work week, so I’m making the best of it–as always…

Holiday Weekend Lift

I was supposed to finish up Week #1 of my new StrongLifts Advanced cycle yesterday but, due to a work obligation, I deferred the lift to today. Late afternoon on a holiday weekend at my gym is great ’cause there were only a few folks around–I nearly had the free weight section to myself…nice!

celsius-drinkingAs I often do to get fired up for a workout, I drank a can of my favorite, all-natural energy drink, Celsius, on the way to the gym. This stuff contains about same amount of caffeine as two cups of coffee. I also drank BCAAs while lifting and directly after as I lifted in a fasted state.

Today’s workout called for squat, bench press, and Pendlay rows and I added some arm work, chin-ups and pull-ups. Since this is the first week in the cycle the weights are all pretty light with 5×5 volume.

I’m glad I got my make-up workout in–it would have been easy to skip. :) I hope everyone has a great Memorial Day weekend and, as always…

Happy Mother’s Day

This was a special day since I actually got to see my Mom on Mother’s Day–she lives in Ohio, I live in Florida. I also saw my niece, who just graduated from The Ohio State University, get commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army–so proud.

Great day with family–not so great from a nutritional standpoint. The family dinner was at the Spaghetti Warehouse and I had pasta for the first time in a long time–tasty for sure. Here’s the thing, I don’t stress when I stray from my version of Primal/Paleo eating. We all have to enjoy food and celebrate with food. The trick, for those of use where sugar and wheat is addictive, is to make these celebrations occasional.

I hope everyone had a great weekend and, as always…

No Easter Chocolate Here

I guess it’s because my kids are too old for Easter baskets full of candy, but I made it through today without eating any chocolate or candy of any kind.

I did make a dessert, Chocolate Lava Cake, a recipe from Paleo Desserts: 125 Delicious Everyday Favorites, Gluten- and Grain-Free cookbook, and it was pretty good considering it contains no sugar. I forgot to add the vanilla which I think would have made it taste better. :( I will try this recipe again with the vanilla for sure.

St. What Day?

protein-shake

Can you see the green tint?

To busy and stressed to even notice that today is St. Patrick’s day…didn’t even wear a stitch of green. By the time I figured it out, I decided to wear green on the inside by adding a cup of spinach and a cup of kale to my protein shake for lunch which gave it a a subtle green hue. :)

For dinner I made a new recipe in the crock pot: http://holisticallyengineered.com/2012/09/whole30-day-30-and-italian-beef.html This dish tasted fantastic!

My diet all day followed my version of Primal/Paleo. As normal, I followed my intermittent fasting routine having that greenish protein shake at about 1:30pm and then the final meal at around 9:30pm. Since I am waiting for my new Ketonix Sport device I can’t test my body for ketosis, but I would be willing to bet with my carbohydrate intake today estimated to be below 100g I am fully in a ketogenic state.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all and, as always…

Happy Valentine’s Day

heart-baloonsVitamix-6300

Busy Valentine’s day at my house. We (minus my daughter who had dance rehearsal) left the house at 5am to travel to Sarasota for my son’s swim meet. Thank goodness for my all-natural, energy drink, Celsius–really helped to jolt me awake this morning! After the meet we headed back to Tampa, arriving about 1:30pm–time to eat! I pulled out the trusty Vitamix and whipped up a green smoothy and paired it with bacon, eggs and a baked potato cut into cubes and browned in the bacon fat. YUM!

I wasn’t really hungry for a meal later, but I made some popcorn (popped in organic coconut oil and some grass-fed butter)–popcorn is one of my splurge foods. :)

Early night for me as I we have to be on the road tomorrow at 5am again for day two of the swim meet. Hope your weekend is going great and, as always…
