Help Me Undo A Holiday Binge

I need support and I’m asking for your help. If you are familiar with me you probably know I find sugar and grains highly addictive. I love the Thanksgiving holiday and all the wonderful food, especially stuffing (made with bread), sweet potato casserole (which seems to be mostly sugar the way we make it), mashed potatoes, rolls and buns (for those turkey sandwiches), and of course, cookies and pies.

This Thanksgiving weekend I decided, from Thursday until Sunday, I would eat and drink anything and everything the holiday had to offer–and I did. Boy did it taste good–but I also didn’t feel very good at times. Maybe it’s all in my head, but it seems I just feel better when I eat clean and drink plenty of water.

Look at the other thing that happened–my weight shot up 5.4 lbs:

weight-gain-2015-11-30

A bunch of this is water weight, as I tend to retain water when I deviate from my version of Primal/Paleo eating, but I can also feel my clothes fitting tighter and my gut has expanded.

ketonix-11-30-21056

I did not perform my normal ketosis test all weekend until this morning and I only registered an “8”–anything under 25 means I’m not in fat-burning mode. I can pretty much bet I never came close to a ketogenic state based on the very high carbohydrate and sugar load I bombarded my body with over the four days.

Clean Eating Challenge

Now, to get back on track, I’m going to try to eat clean until Christmas, roughly three weeks. My goal is to stick close to my version of Primal/Paleo eating and shed the body fat. On top of that, I’m going to commit to my weight lifting routine so I’ll be lean and ripped :)

I could use your moral support in this endeavor! I am weak when it comes to eating at times, especially when I workout consistently–I get so hungry and I tend to slip and eat the bad things.

So who’s with me? Anyone else want to take the challenge and roll into Christmas lean and shredded…let’s do this and, as always…

Another day of waking up in a good mood after another great night of sleep, according to my FitBit Surge. Clearly taking a week off from business travel has done wonders for my stress levels.

The good news is my body has returned to a ketogenic state and I am burning my body fat. What put me back into ketosis? Probably not eating any processed food with no sugar or grains, doing intermittent fasting and compressing my eating down to about a 5 hour window, and completing a rigorous workout featuring heavy (for me) deadlifts.

One of the great benefits for me of being home is it allows me prepare my own food. Tonight I made a great side dish, cauliflower and zucchini fried rice. I used my Vitamix to blend cauliflower into “rice” and cut up some zucchini and half an onion. One trick is to use cheese cloth to squeeze as much water out of the cauliflower a possible. I sauteed all of this in bacon drippings with salt, pepper and then further seasoned with coconut aminos (kinda like soy sauce). Then I spread it all out on a baking sheet and put under the broiler until brown and crispy. This was absolutely delicious!

I feel great as we head past hump day and, as always…

I woke up this fine Saturday feeling rested and in a great mood. All the stresses of the work week had magically melted away. As usual, I practiced intermittent fasting eating my first meal at about 12:30pm, eggs bacon and a green smoothie, and my last meal at a little after 8pm, my usual salad from Chipotle.

Today was one of those days where my body craved nutrition–I had no interest in junk food. I guess maybe my body is trying to heal from last week’s sugar, grains, and alcohol consumption?

I hope everyone is having a great weekend and, as always…

Woke up tired and stressed today. Needed a little more sleep! I conducted my early morning ketosis test as usual and am happy to report I am back in a ketogenic state. Yes, the fat-burning beast is back. Since I’m not traveling this week I’ve been able to control my sugar and gains intake plus get a workout in–that’s probably why I’m in ketosis again.

Hope your week is progressing nicely and, as always…

The Monday morning stress monster woke me up at 2:15am. I turned on TV which sometimes help me fall back asleep, but it did not work, so I got up. I toyed with going to the gym at 5am, but my body didn’t feel up to it. Take a look at my FitBit Surge dashboard sleep entry and you can see the gap in the early morning:

9-28-2015-sleepAfter the birthday pie (with ice cream) last week and over the weekend, my body has been testing out of ketosis the past several days. Today I got back to eating along the lines of my version of Primal/Paleo eating, with a green smoothie and leftovers –no sugar or grains! Hopefully this will put me back into ketosis–we shall see tomorrow morning.

I hope your work week started nicely and, as always…

Guilty Pleasure: Popcorn!

Finally Friday and I woke up feeling great after logging a full eight hours of sleep last night. I stuck pretty close to my version of Primal/Paleo eating today with the exception on one of my guilty pleasures: popcorn. As you know, I try hard to avoid grains in my diet, but when I want a salty snack I find it hard to resist popcorn. I pop it in a combination of coconut oil, I like Carrington Farms Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, 54 Ounce
, and grass-fed butter, I use Kerrygold Pure Irish Butter Foil 8.0 oz (pack of 20), so at least I’m dragging lots of good, saturated fat.

I’m looking forward to the weekend–as always…

Trying To Limit Carbs

I’m continuing my effort to get my body back in ketosis by limiting my carb intake. When I am working out, my carbohydrate threshold to stay in a ketogenic state has been around 200g per day. Since I took a week off from the gym and had a few days of eating that included more sugar and grains than I normally eat, I am struggling to get back into a fat burning state. This morning I tested NOT in ketosis, let’s see how today’s diet affects me.

Hope the week is starting off good and, as always…

Another Healthy Eating Day

Woke up feeling good with minimal stress considering it is Monday and the start of a new work week. I am definitely doing better in the sleep department, logging (with my new FitBit Surge) nearly eight hours last night.

I managed another healthy eating day with a green smoothie (made easily with my trusty Vitamix) and leftover salmon for lunch and rotisserie chicken with a baked potato and broccoli for dinner. All my food choices today followed my version of Primal/Paleo eating with lots of saturated fat, good protein, and no refined sugar, grains, or processed food! Couple this with a great workout, and it’s a pretty good Monday. :)

I hope your work week started out positively and, as always…

Rest Day – Paleo Eating Day

Woke up in a great mood, rested after a full night of sleep. I had plans to get some chores done around the house, but my body and mind needed rest, so I didn’t do too much today but rest. I stuck to my version of Primal/Paleo eating and did a good job of keeping the refined sugar, grains and processed food out of my diet today. I woke up in a ketogenic state as is my goal, and got back to a regular intermittent fasting routine eating my normal two meals: one around noon and one about 7pm. The jalapeno peppers are in high production in the hydroponic garden, so I made another huge and delicious batch of poppers–yum!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend and, as always…

Another One Meal Day

I woke up feeling much better than the past few days because I logged over ten hours of sleep! According to my FitBit Surge, I fell asleep around 6pm last night and woke up at my normal time, roughly 5:15am. Clearly my body needed the rest!

I had an incredibly busy work day and when the smoke cleared at around 5pm, I had not had time to eat anything. For me, this is the magic of ketogenic living–hunger does not dominate my life. I can operate, both physically and mentally, for extended periods of time without needing to eat. I left work and went straight to the gym without eating because I like to lift in a fasted state, so I didn’t eat a meal until after 9pm!

How do manage to live like this without head aches, irritability, dizziness, and the other symptoms associated with low blood sugar? I think there are many factors but mostly I have trained my body to use ketones (as opposed to glucose) as my body’s primary fuel source and I practice intermittent fasting (trying to keep my eating to an eight hour window each day). Th key to transitioning my body from being a sugar burner to a fat burning beast has been trying hard to avoid the consumption of sugar, grains, and processed food–I try to follow my version of Primal/Paleo eating. By the way, the awesome side benefit of this way of life is a lean body (because my body uses stored body fat as fuel).

I sure hope everyone had a wonderful work week and, as always…
