OH-IO

OSU

Today I had the privilege of witnessing my niece give a speech at the annual Candlelight Ceremony as she is graduating from The Ohio State University tomorrow. Very cool!

The family woke up very early to fly to Columbus to attend the graduation ceremonies. With the travel and all, I made relatively good eating choices featuring salads.

We walked all over the university campus and, according to my FitBit One tracker, I exceeded my walking goal with just under 15K steps or 6.93 miles.

I hope your weekend is going great and, as always…

Glorious Sleep!

I got over nine hours of sleep, according to my FitBit One tracker, and woke up feeling great! After firing up with come caffeine by drinking a can of Celsius and taking my BCAAs, I headed to the gym to make up my Friday workout from yesterday.

I harvested and ate my first Kale from my new hydroponic garden setup–very cool! I love the idea of eating homegrown vegetables :)

I hope the weekend is treating you right and, as always…

Blah Kinda Day

Ever have one of those “Blah” kinda days? Felt like I was dragging all day. Maybe my lack of sleep is catching up with me? This is what my FitBit One tracker shows for sleep this month so far:

4-2-2015-sleep-featuredI need all the bars in this graph to be above the red line! šŸ˜€ But this isn’t going to happen anytime soon. :( Before my schedule changed I was able to get to bed earlier and come closer to my goal of at least eight hours a night–now, not so much.
Sleep is one of my key health factors! My FitBit One, really helps me understand my sleep, or lack there of, patterns–I find it quite valuable. If you are interested in purchasing a FitBit tracker, please consider using this link–it costs the same and the tiny commission will help offset the cost of this site!

We are heading into a holiday weekend so, as always…

Got My Steps In

Didn’t get enough sleep last night so I woke up tired. I compensated with a few doses of caffeine throughout the day via my favorite all-natural energy drink, Celsius! :)

Weird eating day as I didn’t eat my first meal until after 3:30pm–busy day! Made myself a protein shake with two cups of spinach–yum. I used chocolate protein powder and added some Walden Farms Calorie Free Chocolate Syrup and it tasted so good! I don’t know how the folks at Walden Farms do it, but this stuff tastes great for not having calories, sugar, or carbs. Almost seems too good to be true!

I got my steps in–according my FitBit One tracker, achieved my goal of walking five miles today! Yes!

Yawn, I’m Sleepy!

Tracking sleep with this device is a powerful tool for me!

Less than six hours of sleep (according to my FitBit One tracker) last night! :( The alarm jolted me awake this morning and I, needless to say, I started the day dragging. When I’m getting the proper sleep I rarely use an alarm clock, my body just wakes up and I start the day refreshed. Lately I’ve been abusing my favorite, all-natural energy drink, Celsius, to overcome the lack of sleep. Not good!

When I’m not traveling for work, I prefer making my food at home but today both meals were takeout. I had smoked pork from a local BBQ joint for lunch and a rice bowl for dinner. In between the meals I had an evening workout and, as usual, I drank my pre-workout BCAAs on the way to the gym (I drink half on the way and half during the workout).

I’m looking forward to the weekend–as always…

Refreshed!

What is the old saying? “Early to bed, early to rise…” My body needed to catch up on sleep and catch up I did–my FitBit One tracker showed me getting nearly 10.5 hours of sleep last night! I woke up refreshed and in a great mood.

With teenagers it seems like almost every weekend entails swim meets and/or dance competitions. This weekend we had neither so I dragged my wife to something I’ve wanted to do for a long time: a hydroponic gardening class. Now I have dabbled in hydroponic farming for a few years and I have not been successful. :( The only thing I’ve been able to consistently produce are herbs and jalapeno peppers. I would love to grow veggies like tomatoes, squash, eggplant, etc. I have spent tons of money and not much food to show for it. The class was great and I learned a bunch–I hope to realize my dream of producing my own vegetables soon. :)

My existing “flood and drain” hydro setup.

After returning home from the class I got my catch-up workout in and then my wife, daughter and I grabbed a early birthday dinner as my wife has a (significant šŸ˜‰ ) birthday coming up this week.

I ended up eating pretty well today although I did splurge with some popcorn popped in cocoanut oil and pure Irish butter–delicious! I probably took in too many carbs today, but my body just seemed to crave food!

I hope your weekend is going great and, as always…

Finally Friday!

It’s been a long week and Friday is finally here! My wife returned yesterday from her trip–it’s good to have her home. :) I woke up completely exhausted due to lack of sleep as, according to my FitBit One tracker, I logged less than six hours last night–that’s horrible. :( I’ve been relying heavily on my all-natural energy drink, Celsius, to power me through this week–man, I love caffeine! :)

I use this handy tool to track my sleep.

If you’ve been following along, I’ve have a pretty good week in terms of keeping my eating close to my version of a Primal/Paleo diet. My hope is nourishing my body with the right food and supplementing with the highest quality vitamins will help combat the stress and lack of sleep.

Since today is Friday, my son and I are doing our Friday splurge–Five Guys burgers and fries! Yum!

five-guysLooking forward to the weekend and catching up with my workout tomorrow. Hope your work week is ending on a positive note and, as always…

Feeling Refreshed!

Woke up feeling fantastic this morning for two reasons:

  1. I finally got enough sleep–over eight hours according to my FitBit One tracker.
  2. Get to go to the gym and catch up on the workout I missed yesterday.

My choice for pre and intra-workout BCAAs!

My morning looked a lot like a Friday morning: ketosis test first thing (tested in a ketogenic state), took my daily 5g of creatine, drank my pre-workout drinks, Celsius energy drink and BCAAs, on the way to the gym.

In keeping with my practice of intermittent fasting, I ate my first meal around 2:30pm and then my final meal about 7:30pm. The morning make up workout included a bunch of squats and I think my body craved protein as a result. :) So, I ended up eating nearly 2,500 estimated calories and, looking back, the vegetables seem to be missing! I’m not worried because I made sure to take my daily vitamins to fill in the nutritional holes.

Sure hope your weekend is going great and, as always…

Friday Accidental Splurge

It’s Friday and I actually woke up very tired for the first time in a long time. This is the kind of tired that makes you not want to get out of bed. I had a meeting that lasted until 11pm last night and had to wake up at 5am this morning so my FitBit One tracker showed me getting less than six hour of sleep–ouch!

The rest of my normal routine was messed up as I had drive my daughter to school, so my regularly scheduled Friday workout will have to happen tomorrow. That’s okay because I just wasn’t feeling great about doing squats after my short night of sleep.

Since I had a busy schedule today I tried something different for lunch to save time. I used my trusty Vitamix to make a protein shake. I normally prefer eating real food over shakes with protein powder, but I needed to whip up something quick so here’s what I used:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 scoop chocolate whey protein
  • about a teaspoon cocoa power
  • a couple of dashes of cinnamon
  • splash of vanilla
  • 1 banana
  • a couple of tablespoons of Just Like Sugar Table Top Sweetener
  • 1 cup organic baby spinach
  • 1 cup organic baby kale
  • 2 cups ice cubes

So I added greens to a protein shake and I wasn’t sure how it would taste, but it was surprisingly good and filling! I think the Just Like Sugar Table Top Sweetener helped. This is the first time I’ve tried this product and I like it, so I’m adding it to the Cool Stuff section.

The shake satisfied me until dinner where I broke out the leftover Paleo Balsamic Chicken and Sausage with some steamed zucchini and yellow squash topped with butter and sea salt, a baked potato, and a glass of red wine.

If I had ended the day’s eating at this point, I would consider my choices pretty much right along the lines of my version of Primal/Paleo eating. But…yeah, there’s a “but”…I heard the leftover birthday cake screaming my name, so I scarfed some down, rationalizing that it is Friday night after a long week, so I deserved it! :) Man, sugar tastes so good. šŸ˜€ I’m okay with my accidental splurge, a little sugar isn’t going to kill me. In fact, even with the cake my estimated carbohydrate intake was still under 200g for the day, so I should maintain my ketogenic state.

The weekend is here–as always…

Need More Sleep :(

I am not sleeping enough. I know how important sleep is, see this post, but I’m not following my own advice and I must start making getting to bed earlier. I use my FitBit One tracker to monitor sleep each night. Maybe this is why I’ve been mainlining Celsius for caffeine-fueled energy! :)

Otherwise I woke up in a good mood today and, other than some chips from Chipotle, I made good food choices that match up with my version of Primal/Paleo eating. Lunch featured a salad from Chipotle and I made a paleo favorite for dinner: Paleo Balsamic Chicken and Sausage. This is a dish is sooooooo tasty and super easy to make.
