green-smoothy-featuredAs I mentioned yesterday, after a four-day holiday binge, I decided to make a concentrated effort to follow my version of Primal/Paleo eating. I did a good job today! As usual, I fasted until around noon and then had a big ‘ole green smoothie with some leftover turkey for lunch. Dinner consisted of a turkey, bacon, sour cream, and cheese loaded potato with steamed broccoli. My keto test showed this eating put me back into a ketogenic state, so I’m burning fat again!

I’m looking forward to staying strong and eating clean for a few weeks and seeing the results. As always…

A Holiday Challenge!

Help Me Undo A Holiday Binge

I need support and I’m asking for your help. If you are familiar with me you probably know I find sugar and grains highly addictive. I love the Thanksgiving holiday and all the wonderful food, especially stuffing (made with bread), sweet potato casserole (which seems to be mostly sugar the way we make it), mashed potatoes, rolls and buns (for those turkey sandwiches), and of course, cookies and pies.

This Thanksgiving weekend I decided, from Thursday until Sunday, I would eat and drink anything and everything the holiday had to offer–and I did. Boy did it taste good–but I also didn’t feel very good at times. Maybe it’s all in my head, but it seems I just feel better when I eat clean and drink plenty of water.

Look at the other thing that happened–my weight shot up 5.4 lbs:

weight-gain-2015-11-30

A bunch of this is water weight, as I tend to retain water when I deviate from my version of Primal/Paleo eating, but I can also feel my clothes fitting tighter and my gut has expanded.

ketonix-11-30-21056

I did not perform my normal ketosis test all weekend until this morning and I only registered an “8”–anything under 25 means I’m not in fat-burning mode. I can pretty much bet I never came close to a ketogenic state based on the very high carbohydrate and sugar load I bombarded my body with over the four days.

Clean Eating Challenge

Now, to get back on track, I’m going to try to eat clean until Christmas, roughly three weeks. My goal is to stick close to my version of Primal/Paleo eating and shed the body fat. On top of that, I’m going to commit to my weight lifting routine so I’ll be lean and ripped :)

I could use your moral support in this endeavor! I am weak when it comes to eating at times, especially when I workout consistently–I get so hungry and I tend to slip and eat the bad things.

So who’s with me? Anyone else want to take the challenge and roll into Christmas lean and shredded…let’s do this and, as always…

I’m back to posting after a work week that included visiting four cities in five days! Needless to say it’s nice to be home for the weekend. Today my plan was to hit the gym and then watch college football. Because I don’t like to workout after eating, I fasted until after my workout and had my first meal at around 4:30ish pm. That’s about a 20 hour fast! I explain here why I practice intermittent fasting. By the way, I deadlifted 325 lb., which is nearly twice my body weight, while in a fasted state, having eaten nothing, other than BCAAs, for about 18 hours before the workout.

The combination of fasting, heavy weightlifting, and low carbohydrate intake combined to keep my body in a ketogenic state, burning body fat as fuel.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend and, as always…

What a crazy week with travel to two cities with four flight segments and a five hour drive! But it’s Friday and I am back home and happy. I actually got over seven hours of sleep, according to my FitBit Surge tracker and woke up feeling great. Despite a large carbohydrate load yesterday, my body did test positive for ketosis this morning, meaning I’m still burning fat!

I followed my normal practice of intermittent fasting and didn’t eat anything in the morning. My plan was to break my fast at around noon but, I had a meetings at 11:30 and 1:00, which left no time for lunch. I picked up my daughter from the bus stop late in the afternoon, she hadn’t eaten all day either and requested Chinese food for dinner! Now this food is definitely not in line with my version of Primal/Paleo eating, but fasting and eating a single meal automatically kept my calorie consumption somewhat reasonable.

After a long work week on the road, I’m ready to relax this weekend–as always…

I’m on the road for work–feeling some travel stress as usual. I got a less sleep than I like and that’s not good. :( Even though I’m in a hotel room, I still performed the daily ketosis test and my body is in a ketogenic state–that’s good! I go on and on about the benefits of being a fat burning machine, and today was a great example. Per usual, I practiced intermittent fasting and skipped breakfast. Then our team decided to work through lunch. Here’s the benefit: no low blood sugar symptoms like lack of focus, headache, dizziness. Before I adopted my version of Primal/Paleo eating, I had to eat every few hours or I would suffer those types of symptoms and could think of nothing but food.

beer-flightMake no mistake, when it came time to eat, I went a little crazy! First I went to a local brewery and sampled the craft beers. Then I found a highly rated local Mexican place and had a margarita and a colorful plate of enchiladas they called the Mexican flag. Yum! Didn’t exactly follow my normal plan, but the food tasted great.

Almost halfway to the weekend–as always…

Today was one of those crazy busy days where I left the office after 7pm and still hadn’t yet eaten. To be honest, I really did not even think about food all day–no headaches, loss of focus, or any “low blood sugar” symptoms.

This is one of the benefits of ketogenic living where the brain is not dependent on glucose for fuel…and,  I burn my own body fat for fuel!! Sweet :)

Looking forward to a day off from work tomorrow–as always…

I’ve heard sitting is the new smoking, so I’m guessing driving over five hours today is probably not great. :) Woke up early and drove to a meeting in Orlando, then late in the afternoon left Orlando and drove to Miami for a meeting tomorrow. Consequently, I didn’t come close to my step goal, only getting in 5,446 steps.

As I suspected, the doughnut frenzy yesterday kept my body out of ketosis according to my early morning test. My goal this week is to return to a ketogenic state and get back to burning fat!

Woke up tired and stressed today. Needed a little more sleep! I conducted my early morning ketosis test as usual and am happy to report I am back in a ketogenic state. Yes, the fat-burning beast is back. Since I’m not traveling this week I’ve been able to control my sugar and gains intake plus get a workout in–that’s probably why I’m in ketosis again.

Hope your week is progressing nicely and, as always…

I made it to Friday and, more importantly, I lived to write this after eating four donuts yesterday. :) In fact, I not only survived my dietary lapse, I tested my body first thing the morning after and, despite a huge sugar and carbohydrate intake, my body tested in ketosis. Yeah, that’s right, I’m still a fat burning beast even though I made an unfortunate food choice.

There’s a huge lesson for me in this: health is a marathon not a sprint. I’m going to eat donuts now and then…I want to eat donuts and pizza and drink beer now and then. But to maintain my health, I want to limit these “treats” as much as possible.

Let’s enjoy life folks and do it in a healthy way–as always…

Back Out Of Ketosis

Got my sleep back on track last night with 8 hours and 40 minutes (according to my FitBit Surge) and woke up feeling rested and in a good mood. When I took my ketosis test first thing in the morning, I was not in ketosis–not my goal at all!

I am pretty sure I’ll be back in a ketogenic state tomorrow as I only took in an estimated 1300 calories today due to a very busy schedule which didn’t leave me much time to eat.

Tune in tomorrow to find out if I turn back into a fat burning beast and, as always…
