Home football game today–the whole family going together, so I planned to feast today and eat whatever I felt like, good or bad. I ended up not straying too far from my version of Primal/Paleo eating–the major bad food being some chips, the bun on a burger, and popcorn. Oh yeah, and a couple of scotch and waters :) I’m proud of myself for staying away from beer–a major temptation for me when attending football games, especially when my team plays poorly!

I hope everyone had a great weekend and, as always…

Another good night’s sleep and I woke up feeling great and ready for some NFL football! My wife and son continued our tradition of hitting a favorite restaurant before the game–our version of tailgating–and I skipped the bread on the sandwich and only ate half the fries.

The Buccaneers finally won a home game, and felt like celebrating with pizza, but I ended up make a much better choice and had a celebratory salad from Chipotle. 😀

I had a great Sunday with my family outside in the fresh air and sunshine–hope your Sunday went well and, as always…

My awesome FitBit Surge showed I caught up on sleep after getting 9.5 hours last night. Woke up refreshed and in a GREAT mood. Today was bittersweet as it was the last City Relays swim meet for my son–he’s a senior high school swimmer. This meet is really fun for the kids as 25 high schools all swim nothing but relay races–tons of school spirit and fun! It was so great to see him enjoy this meet, but sad since it is the last time we will enjoy this event. My kids are nearly grown. :(

If you hang around this blog you know I don’t generally eat until about noon as part of my intermittent fasting routine. The big swim meet concluded a little before 1pm and by this time I was ready to eat. Let me tell you, I was so tempted to grab some fast food and eat during my 45 minute drive home…but I resisted temptation and waited until I got home and heated up some healthy leftovers.

sign-no-chipsFor the evening meal, temptation reared its ugly head again as I made a run to Chipotle. Mr. Temptation kept trying to get me to slip over to the Publix grocery store next to the restaurant and grab a box of those evil donuts, BUT I resisted. :) I even said “NO” to the chips and guac–so proud of myself (and I didn’t even wear my sign).

Let me tell you it was hard to resist Mr. Temptation today, but I did it and kept my choices in line with my version of Primal/Paleo eating–Yay!

Defeating Mr. Temptation is a daily struggle for me, but today I won! As always…

Baseball Food Rocks!

8-29-2015-featured

Caught up on some needed sleep last night and woke up in a great mood because today our family made a trip to the ballpark to see the Rays play. My eating plan for the day was throw nutrition out the window and eat all the great junk food associated baseball including beer, hot dogs, beer, popcorn, beer, pretzels, beer, cracker jack, and of course, beer.

I executed my plan and ate and drank to my heart’s content. I hope your weekend is going well and, as always…

I’m Back After A Few Days Off

I flew up to Ohio last week to see relatives and take a few days off. It’s hard to believe I’ve been posting my food diary and workout log since late September pretty much every day–I needed a break!

For the most part I ate pretty clean and followed my version of Primal/Paleo as my mother eats the same way I do and she cooked for me–yum! We ate lots of great stuff from her garden, including home grown strawberries and kale. But…

There is always a “but,” right? A week ago my cousin took me to the Rush concert in Columbus where we chowed on chips and queso and I tried to drink all the booze in Ohio while prepping for the show 😀 I paid the price the following day, but I had a fantastic night!chips-and-quesorush-columbus

Even though I had a few “cheat” meals, I’m going to try to get back on track and adhere to my tagline:

Headed Back Home

I woke up early and feeling great, ready to fly up to Ohio to spend a few days with my mother and extended family. This is a shot from my window seat–sometimes it boggles my mind that we humans are able to ride in giant metal tube with wings and transport ourselves across the country:

flight-cloudsBecause of my travel, I ended up not really eating much until evening, thus doing another extended intermittent fast of sorts. Boy the wait was sure worth it as my cousin made a fantastic meal of smoked ribs, cauliflower, and potatoes. For dessert we had ice cream topped with fresh strawberries from my mother’s garden.

I had such a fantastic time with my mom, aunt, and cousin’s family back in the area where I spent my early childhood.

Since I’m on a brief vacation of sorts, you will probably see a few days of me doing some splurge eating! :)

I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend and, as always…

Swim Meet, All Day

The good news is I got to attend my son’s swim meet today. His swim career is coming to an end soon and I am appreciating these moments before they are gone. The bad news is we left the house for Ocala at 6am. :( We did not get home until after 10pm. Long day, but well worth it as my boy cut time in three out of four events.

I did take the opportunity to get some in some walking between events: 7.74 miles.  Whoo hoo! 😀

I hope you spent some time with family this weekend if possible and, as always…

Happy Mother’s Day

This was a special day since I actually got to see my Mom on Mother’s Day–she lives in Ohio, I live in Florida. I also saw my niece, who just graduated from The Ohio State University, get commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Army–so proud.

Great day with family–not so great from a nutritional standpoint. The family dinner was at the Spaghetti Warehouse and I had pasta for the first time in a long time–tasty for sure. Here’s the thing, I don’t stress when I stray from my version of Primal/Paleo eating. We all have to enjoy food and celebrate with food. The trick, for those of use where sugar and wheat is addictive, is to make these celebrations occasional.

I hope everyone had a great weekend and, as always…

OH-IO

OSU

Today I had the privilege of witnessing my niece give a speech at the annual Candlelight Ceremony as she is graduating from The Ohio State University tomorrow. Very cool!

The family woke up very early to fly to Columbus to attend the graduation ceremonies. With the travel and all, I made relatively good eating choices featuring salads.

We walked all over the university campus and, according to my FitBit One tracker, I exceeded my walking goal with just under 15K steps or 6.93 miles.

I hope your weekend is going great and, as always…

Family Time

Woke up this morning feeling great after catching up on some much needed sleep. Tonight the entire family spent the evening at my Dad’s house along with my sister and her family. My life is pretty hectic, but I need to slow down and do this more often! I ate a huge amount of delicious food and had a wonderful time.

Earlier in the afternoon, I went to pick up my daughter from her dance rehearsal and on the way I listened to a great podcast titled, The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly of Crossfit hosted by Tim Ferriss featuring the guest Kelly Starrett. These are two smart guys and this is a very interesting interview that deals with much more than Crossfit.

I own this book by Kelly Starrett–very technical but a fantastic read if you are serious about athletic performance.

I’ve been complaining a bunch lately about my terrible squat form. In the podcast Kelly talked about having basic movement functionality–in the context of the squat he said you should be able to keep you feet together heels on the floor then, with your knees together, squat to the floor (no weights involved).  You should be able to squat all the way down, like a little kid at a campfire. He said if you can’t to that you clearly have hip and/or ankle mobility issues that need addressing.

Hello! This is my problem. Now I’ve known this was an issue for me, but hearing an actual, simple test is great because this will help me focus on my mobility/form and, until I fix the hip/ankle faults, I will leave the weights alone! Sure it will be frustrating to completely start over but using good form will help my squat in the long run.

I hope your weekend is going great and, as always…
