Today was unusual because I only ate one meal (and not by design)! I spent all day working on this web site in preparation for the launch and did not take time to eat until dinner–in essence, I accidentally fasted for about 20 hours. This is the wonder of being in a ketogenic state, I am not a slave to hunger. At 5pm my wonderful family took me out for my birthday dinner to a relatively healthy and tasty restaurant where I enjoyed a curry chicken rice bowl.

When we got home, the family surprised me with a large mint chocolate chip cupcake. My initial reaction was to not eat this gluten and sugar laden treat, but then I realized I would probably offend my family who took the time to go to the bakery and buy this giant cupcake and decorate it with candles. So I chose to eat it and, I’m not going to lie, it was absolutely delicious!

It will be interesting to see if the cupcake and the sticky rice from the dinner throw me out of ketosis–my bet is that it will! Tune in tomorrow to find out…

The weekend is often when I stray from my eating pattern, but today I not only stuck to my intermittent fasting but I came in under my caloric goal generally eating nutritious food, including a green smoothy and lots of leftover short ribs. I spent much of the day  working on this blog so food wasn’t a priority today. Clearly water consumption wasn’t a focus as I fell short of my goal.

My busy week included a few nights of less than optimal sleep, so I enjoyed my eight hours of wonderful sleep! My morning ketosis test proved I ran on keytones yesterday and through the night!

Very good day for nutrition and water consumption! Today was a lift day with me hitting the gym at 6am and pounding the weights! I managed to keep my intermittent fasting routine by eating breakfast/lunch at around noon featuring an awesome green smoothy and leftover spaghetti squash topped with a very meaty organic sauce and Parmesan cheese. Dinner consisted of leftover short ribs and some dark chocolate.

I spent the day in ketosis and predict that I will maintain this state given the lack of sugar and complex carbs in my diet today.

Today I did my latest “Stronglifts Advanced”  Friday, Week #3 workout consisting of squats, bench press, and Pendlay rows. I also threw in some extra work since I missed the Monday workout due to business travel–five sets of ten reps of dips and chin-ups (alternating between dips and chin-up sets).

Good session this morning as I felt strong–I think the lack of sleep from the business trip on Monday and Tuesday is behind me!

I had a great eating day featuring a green smoothy, eggs, and bacon for breakfast/lunch (maintaining my intermittent fasting routine by eating this meal at noon) and homemade Slow Cooker Korean Short Ribs for dinner. The sort ribs tasted incredible and are so easy to make! I ended up way under my calorie goal but not stressing because today wasn’t a workout day and the calories I did eat were quality and satisfying.

Didn’t get the sleep I would have liked but, hey, that’s life…I’m not stressing over it. I started today in ketosis and based on eating less than 100g of carbs I expect to wake up tomorrow in ketosis as well.

Ahhhhh, so good to be home and back in the gym! As you can see, I went a tiny little bit over the calorie target goal today, but I’m not sweating it because I got my workout in this morning. I nearly got my eight hours of sleep last night and I managed to drink my 64 fl. oz. of water. Traveling the previous two days takes a toll, but my mood and stress level returned to normal which I can attribute to being back at home (sweet home)! Oh, and if you are scoring at home, I recovered and am back into ketosis (love burning ketones as fuel–just say “no” to excess glucose).

Being at home allows me to prepare and cook my meals which allowed me to include a green smoothy with my bacon and eggs for breakfast/lunch and spaghetti squash and organic sauce with tons of beef and sausage. Yum!

Due to business travel, I did not get a chance to work out on Monday. Even though I was excited to hit the gym after a four day lay off, I’m not going to lie, I had concerns about the quality of the potential quality of today’s workout. I think because my body felt rested and because you could shoot a cannon through the gym (it seemed that empty), the workout went great.

I will say that I am at the start of the cycle of “Stronglifts Avanced” so the weights were light as I am working on form. Today was the Wednesday program for week #1 so squats, standing barbell overhead press, and deadlifts.

Looks like I have bounced back from yesterday–man, did that sound like a stock market report or what! :) Yesterday was tough–lots of stress with an early morning plane flight and all day customer meetings. Now add on top of that I ate too much and ended the day with a bunch of sugar resulting in me slipping out of ketosis. Boo, hiss!

Well, seemed a bit better, but certainly not great. You will notice I started my morning mainlining caffeine in the form of a pair of those awful, artificially flavored diet sodas–YUCK! I managed to keep my intermittent fasting going by eating at the airport just before my 1:30pm flight home. With no time for a proper meal, I grabbed beef jerky and almonds from the newsstand near  my gate. Pure protein and good fat, good job Dan! But wait, craving more caffeine, I washed it down with a Monster energy drink! At least the poison was the “low carb” kind–still, not a shining moment for me. :(

I finished the day with a big salad while celebrating with the family after my son’s high school swim meet. Being back home and off the airplanes has certainly lowered the stress level–let’s see if I can get some decent sleep tonight and if I am back into ketosis tomorrow.

Today I clearly exceeded my caloric goal! It was a tough day as I woke up at 3am to catch a flight at 5:20am, which is early even by my standards. Monday is normally a workout day, but with the business travel I wasn’t able to get to the gym. I was able to keep to my intermittent fasting routine with my first meal at around noon.

I did make a couple of mistakes today that contributed to the extra calories. The first is not a big deal in my mind as I think I over-estimated the amount beef satay and zucchini that I logged for dinner. Since these foods are in line with my eating mindset, no big deal. The second one did, however have a negative affect on me. Turns out the fine folks at the Marriott gave me a coupon allowing me to grab an item from their snack store. Well, I clearly made a poor choice and, as you can see in the dinner meal below, I indulged myself with a 450 calories of some sort of processed, sugary Cracker Jack snack. As a result, I tested as not in ketosis the next morning–lesson learned!
